Stop! Hammer Time! Though harem pants can be traced back to the music video for MC Hammer’s hit single “U Can’t Touch This,” the baggy, voluminous pant silhouette (with a tricky low-hanging crotch) also had a fashion moment in the late 2000s. After the flowy trousers appeared in the Fall 2009 collections of labels such as Givenchy and Balenciaga, celebrities swiftly got on board, too, where stars such as Kim Kardashian West, Gwen Stefani, Rihanna, and Victoria Beckham were all spotted giving the pants—usually worn with heels—a whirl. But like many fashion trends, the polarizing pant soon lost its appeal, especially after the skinny jean craze of the early 2000s made a surprising comeback. But is it time for the harem pant to make a vengeful return? Hailey Baldwin certainly thinks so.
The model was spotted stepping out in New York City today wearing a pair of metallic gold harem pants, which she styled with an off-the-shoulder black knit sweater and pointy pumps. For extra dazzle, she matched her gold earrings and chain necklace to the trousers. Perhaps fellow It girls—Gigi, Bella, Kendall—will soon get on the harem pant trend, too. The good news: The reincarnation here seems less voluminous this time around, and a little more streamlined—dare we say, very wearable. It may be time to give your drainpipe jeans a rest.
